در این میان انرژی الکتریکی می‌تواند یکی از بهترین جایگزین‌ها برای سوخت‌ فسیلی باشد. روش‌های متعددی برای تولید انرژی الکتریکی وجود دارد که از آن جمله می‌توان به توربین‌های آبی در نیروگاه‌های برق-آبی، توربین‌های بادی در نیروگاه‌های بادی و صفحات خورشیدی اشاره کرد.

یکی از روش‌های نسبتا پاک و تجدیدپذیر برای تولید انرژی الکتریکی استفاده از سلول‌های الکتروشیمیایی یا همان باطری هاست.

ابداع باطری های لیتیوم یون (Lithium-ion) انقلابی در صنعت تولید باتری‌های وسایل الکترونیکی بود و امروزه به لطف باتری‌های لیتیوم-یونی (LIB) است که می‌توانید یک گوشی هوشمند پر مصرف را ۲۴ ساعت بدون شارژ کردن استفاده کنید و یا با یک دوربین عکاسی DSLR ساعت‌ها در طبیعت به عکاسی بپردازید!

حجم پایین و سایر مزایای این باطری‌ها، امکان ساخت ابزارهای الکترونیکی بسیار کوچکتر با قابلیت حمل بالاتر را فراهم آورده است.

اما در این میان مشکلاتی وجود دارد؛ به طور مثال در یک خودروی برقی، علاوه بر حجم بالای فضایی که باتری اشغال می نماید، این خودروها نهایتا می توانند ۸۰ تا ۱۰۰ کیلومتر مسافت طی نمایند و پس از آن بایستی به مدت ۶ تا ۸ ساعت شارژ شود!

علاوه بر پایین بودن چگالی انرژی باتری های لیتیوم-یونی مشکل اشتعال و انفجار احتمالی را نیز بالا می برد!

بدون شک باتری های لیتیوم-یونی انقلابی را در طراحی و بهره بری محصولات مختلف به همراه داشته اند، اما به طور قطع در آینده پاسخگو نخواهند بود.
